Superman Action Comics by Dan Jurgens Omnibus Vol 1- A Review

I love me some Superman omnibus.

Oversized hardcover collections of stories and runs of comics is such a great reading experience. The format just makes it feel like somebody respected the material enough to put it into one beautiful package. The pages look wonderful blown up, and it looks great on the shelf too. I love it.

Please note that I will not be reviewing the Rebirth material in this review, as I have already done that on many occasions, but like I did with the Tomasi/Gleason volume, just the book itself as published.

Let’s get to it!

I was excited when I heard that DC would be collecting Dan Jurgens’ Rebirth run in omnibus format, mainly because it meant I could read the entire series in essentially one place rather than seven, including several stories which had yet to be printed in a bigger size.

I try as much as possible to collect each of my all time favorites in oversized hardcover editions, so this was a most welcome announcement! I was happy with the deluxe hardcover editions of Dan’s Rebirth issues, but Lois and Clark is one of my favorite Superman stories ever, and despite having that story in two standard sized tpbs, it’s even nicer to have it oversized and included with the Rebirth stuff.

Omnibuses are all the rage among comic collectors these days for good reason. It is a grand format in which to collect and read your favorite stories, and Superman Rebirth most definitely qualifies! I preordered the book the second I heard about it earlier this year. My copy arrived in the mail a few days ago, and I am very satisfied.

To start, it’s nice that DC let Dan Jurgens and Pat Gleason draw new covers for their respective omnibus collections. Dan’s art isn’t quite what it used to be (I much prefer his older, 90s stuff), but it does make you feel like we’re getting new content of an “old” favorite.

Also, unlike the Rebirth deluxe volumes, the omnibus has a wonderful table of contents, which I also appreciate very much! It serves as a nice intro and overview to the material as you’re about to read it.

Speaking of intros, Dan writes a new one to the volume about the birth of the project and his experience working on it, something I absolutely love. I wish DC and Marvel had it as a standard rule to include a new introduction from at least one creator in every collected edition.

Hoping that volume 2 includes an intro as well!

The book is built very sturdy with nice sewn binding, making it durable for multiple reads. I could be wrong, but this volume also seems to open a touch wider than the deluxes, so there’s less gutter loss, a definite plus, especially on the splash pages.

I also think it’s great that the material ultimately will span over two 800-900 page volumes, an absolutely ideal size when holding the book in your hand or on your lap, rather than one unruly, massive collection like the Tomasi volume. This fits especially well with Jurgens’ stuff, since his Rebirth run was preceded by the two stories that ushered everything in, and a few side projects that he has done since. Really looking forward to having all of those collected in the second volume as well, especially the recent Superman: Hero for All Treasury Special, so that everything you read is the same size.

The volume nicely collects everything through Superman Reborn, probably my favorite story of Superman Rebirth and a wonderful end point for the first collection. There are some nice extras including scripts, sketches and such that follow, which are also of interest to anyone wanting to dig a little deeper into the process of creating the books. Variant covers from the issues are collected along the way at the beginning of each chapter, as well.

I would highly recommend this run to any fan of Superman as I just think it is one of the character’s high water marks in his history. To have it collected in a big, handsome package that is intended to be the final word on the material is just exhilarating. I couldn’t be any happier.

I’m already looking forward to the second volume, out July 14, 2026!
