Let me just get something out of the way before starting. I’m not a fan of superhero TV shows.
Don’t get me wrong, I loved the Adam West “Batman” series as kid, as did basically everyone born before 1999, and since then there have been a couple of blips on the radar here and there. “Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman” Season 1 springs to mind, and let it be known that ALL of the Netflix Marvel series, which I love and are brilliant, to me seem more like movies cut into thirteen parts given their very cinematic qualities, than TV shows. But overall, I’m just not a fan. “Inhumans” was horrible, “Agents of Shield” has never grabbed me, and worst of all are all of the CW DC shows, which are far too “CW-ized”- teenage cast, angst, watered down concepts, etc- for my liking. I know I’m weird, as everyone at some point has been obsessed with “The Flash,” “Arrow,” and all the rest, but just not my cup of tea.
In a few short weeks, audiences will see the premiere of the latest entry to that aforementioned list, with the SyFy Channel original series, “Krypton.” After being announced nearly two years ago, the show, as you know, has been teased many times over. Recently, however, a trailer premiered (above) which featured footage of Brainiac, who has never been used in a live action adaptation before, complete with skull ship and beautiful Gary Frank-esque look from the now classic “Brainiac” story from Action Comics 866-870. The trailer also features several DC creators talking about what went into the decision to make Brainiac part of this new show, and I must say I’m intrigued.
But will it be any good?
SyFy has made some exclusive shows over the years but I really haven’t watched any, probably because it no longer resembles the SciFi Channel I grew up with (Sharknado 6? Really?). I’ve been meaning for a while now to watch “The Expanse,” even though I have no idea what it’s about, it just looks cool, and “Farscape” has been on my queue seemingly forever. But outside of those, that’s pretty much it. As a result, I have no idea what to expect from this new Krypton show. The teenage cast suggests CW, but the heavy sci-fi look and concepts looks like pure comic books, so it’s probably somewhere between that and Netflix in terms of quality. But are SyFy exclusive shows any good? I don’t exactly hear anyone talking about them…
Either way, this show looks like they’re trying to give sci-fi fans in general what they want, as time travel, legacy characters, alien planets and superhero origins, or at least superhero history, will be featured, and I’m good with that. For me, they’re off to a good start as ANYTHING that references the Byrne/Mignola 1987 masterpiece World of Krypton means I am there (Seg-El is the main character! Yes!!). For that matter, anything that references Adam Strange means I’m there!
This is a show I can see myself either following over the course of its entire run, or becoming completely disinterested in after the first episode. Even so, whether it’s any good or not, the fact that we can now say that comic book based adaptations have so saturated our market of entertainment that we are now getting exclusive Superman shows for cable channels is a huge, huge, win. After the latest trailer and the Brainiac reveal, consider my curiosity officially piqued.
Bottom line, I’ll be watching when it premieres on March 21.
If you want more info on the new “Krypton” series premiering next month, SciFi Channel’s website actually has some pretty cool features on their page: http://www.syfy.com/krypton/videos/krypton-official-trailer-2
