Huh?
I think I’m going to do something completely out of left field for most of you reading and do an art week post featuring an artist who, to my knowledge, has never even drawn a Superman comic. That word at the top probably describes a few folks’ reactions to the headline.
Growing up I was always a huge X-Men fan, and to this day I follow many veteran creators of Marvel’s most favorite mutants, including Paul Smith, whose simple, classic style is one I enjoy very much. This beautiful approach to his art has served him well on gorgeous stories like The Golden Age, Doctor Strange, Iron Man, and of course Uncanny X-Men. Despite the simplicity of his work, there is also a clear mastery of human emotion and expression, whose subtlety might make it undiscernible at first. Those who might disagree should take a closer look.
Smitty is pretty active on Facebook and posts new pictures of work- doodles, commissions, original art, etc- each week, including, to my delight, plenty of amazing Superman sketches. Although he has not been associated with the Man of Steel at all during his time in the industry, I have come across more than a few nice selections that I thought I’d share with all of you today.
Enjoy!
