Superman Commission by Jonathan Case

Every so often, Twitter has its moments.

Finding out about Dan Jurgens’ appearance in San Jose last summer was pretty awesome. Seeing a random Superman commission by Jonathan Case a few months ago was pretty great too!

I’ve known of Case for a while, and have read some of his indie stuff in the past. Although he hasn’t done too much work for the Big 2, what he has done has been fairly impressive. Most recently I’ve enjoyed his astoundingly gorgeous covers for Dynamite’s Green Hornet/Miss Fury miniseries. It got me thinking.

Jonathan is probably best known for his indie, period piece heist graphic novel The New Deal, and I love me some Golden Age Superman, especially the Fleischer stuff. Like Case, I’m also a fan of period piece stuff and the style of classic movies.

After checking out Jonathan’s site, I found his commission prices to be incredibly reasonable and decided to order a Superman commission from him. I’ve ALWAYS loved when someone draws a classy Clark Kent, and the fedora and trench coat goes so well with Superman. In my correspondence with him, Case said this is totally in his wheelhouse, and he could knock out a black and white piece in a month.

Man, he wasn’t kidding!

The commission arrived at my house this week and I couldn’t be happier.

I love the sharp suit, shiny shoes, perfectly angled hat and subtle Superman reference in this piece. It’s also on thick stock paper and fits perfectly in an 11×17 frame.

To be clear, I asked for Clark in a casual pose- the shirt rip will have to wait for another time- and this is just great. This is my second Superman commission I’ve ever ordered (the first being from Steve Rude). I must order another one some day!

In the meantime, I wanted to make sure I shared it with you guys. While I’m at it, I think I’ll make it my new profile pic on Twitter too. Enjoy!

If anyone is interested, you can find more of Case’s work or can order a commission for yourself at jonathancase.net.
